Hazen Revisited
The Township of Hazen is over 135 years old. In the early 1900's it was a bustling railroad community and center of commerce for regional agricultural development spawned by the Newlands Irrigation Project. In its heyday Hazen boasted several saloons, stores, a post office and even elegant hospitality in the form of the Palace Hotel.
Having languished over time into a few local residents and two stores consisting of the old gas station and an antique shop, Hazen is poised for a rebirth. Highway 50 bisecting Hazen is being reconstructed into a four lane, controlled access corridor. On the South side, a residential and commercial community of over 3,000 acres is about to break ground. To the North and East of the Town, GRID and GRIP are commencing large scale commercial and industrial development on their fee properties as enhanced by their geothermal resources.
The Township of Hazen consists of approximately 160 acres of which 83 acres are allocated between developable lots and streets. Removing the land being taken by the Highway widening project and other peripheral areas, GRIP and its owners have fee title to approximately 2/3 of the remaining, undeveloped land in the Town.
Hazen Revisited is our plan to return the Town to its former prominence as a vibrant gateway to Churchill Country while retaining a Western flair to evoke memories of the past.
To accomplish this objective we are working with the Churchill County administration on a series of permit initiatives that will be a prelude to development. These initiatives involve the following steps:
- vacating the Town's original street network in our fee ownership area as a precursor to development of a planned, integrated, commercial community
- pursuing permit options to create a planned unit, commercial development consisting of shops, offices, restaurants and the like
- addressing infrastructure issues pertinent to such a development
Our site will have the distinction of being the center of a thriving, modern day, commercial and residential community numbering many business and thousands of residents.
